Technician Spotlight series - here's Video Op James Edgcombe
Next up in our Technician spotlight is James Edgcombe - one of our wonderful Video Operators here at Orchard Onset ⚡️
👋 Who are you & what do you do?
Hey I’m James, and I’m a Video Op from sunny Cornwall
🎬 What’s your getting into the industry story?
Coming from Cornwall, the film industry just didn’t seem accessible. When the opportunity came up for some work experience at Panavision, & on-set for a week of test shooting on a film, I jumped at it
⏱️ How long have you been in this role?
It’s been a while - I’ve been in the video department for ten years now!
🌟 What do you enjoy the most?
It’s definitely watching the Director’s vision come to life, using the tools within Q-take to aid onset. Whether that’s editing, using mix & overlays, or pulling up references to support other crew members
📺 TV/ Films you loved working on?
Some personal highlights have been The Swimmers and Aquaman 2. I love jobs that allow me to get super technical, whether that’s managing multiple cameras, working with long range wireless video transmitters, editing on-set, or working in challenging and remote locations
🏄♂️ Best way to spend down-time off of set?
If I’m not on-set I’ll be in the sea! Surfing, free diving or spearfishing..
💭 Tips for those starting out:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions within your department and wider ones - understanding a filmset as a whole is such an incredibly valuable skill. You can use that understanding to predict and pre-empt situations - so you become proactive and get ahead!
Book James for your next project!
