20 January 2025
Technician Spotlight series - and this one's on Digital Orchard DIT Curtis Ashley
Starting off the week with another Technician Spotlight chat - this time we chatted to our wonderful DIT Curtis Ashley 💥
What’s your getting into the industry story?
My father worked in the industry for over a decade, when I was young I got opportunities to work in catering on jobs like Harry Potter, whilst that was a great experience working in film, what I really wanted was to be part of the process. I love working as a DIT, not only have I travelled far doing it, but a role where you can be big help in achieving the right look of a film
⏱️ How long have you been working in this role?
I’ve now been working in this role for nearly a decade
What do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the crunch moments, when stuff gets hairy and tempers frayed, running out of time to make the shot or whatever it is. But you can do something by being alert listening in and having either an answer or for instance bringing up a previous scene. So we can get to the right decision quicker
📺 TV Show/ Films you loved working on?
I recently completed working on a BSL sign language film, a film trying to break the boundaries of what not only the rules around shooting BSL content, but what are expectations of what that might look like. It looks fantastic, has a very small budget but I think it will look great. I learnt a lot with this film as well. Having autism I struggle to always put myself into others shoes, on this film where a lot of the crew where speaking BSL, I found myself on the outside of those conversations, I felt in a small way a little taste of what other people go through
Best way to spend down-time off set?
Gaming, writing, photography, football
💭 Tips for those starting out
Learn set etiquette, it’s a dying art it seems but it’s integral to a well running set. Most HOD’s will want to work with you again if you focus on this
